New Posts Mohammed Rafi

Mohammed Rafi (December 24, 1924 - July 31, 1980) was arguably the greatest Hindi/Urdu playback singer in Bollywood. Rafi still remains popular in South Asia and in many other parts of the world such as the UK, Kenya, West Indies, etc. where South Asian immigrants have settled. He continues to inspire new Bollywood playback singers like Sonu Nigam, Mohammed Aziz, Shabbir Kumar and Anwar.

Rafi sang many duets with Lata, but he has also sung a large number of songs with Geeta Dutt and Lata's sister Asha Bhosle as well. His songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawaalis to ghazals and bhajans, and from slow melancholic tunes to fast fun-filled songs.

New Posts Geeta Dutt

Geeta Dutt (November 23, 1930 - July 20, 1972) was an Indian playback singer. Geeta Dutt was born into a rich zamindaar's family as Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri in Faridpur, East Bengal in 1930. In 1942, her parents shifted to a Dadar apartment in Bombay when she was twelve. Over there in their modest flat at Dadar, composer/music director Hanuman Prasad, overheard her singing casually and agreed to impart her training in singing. He launched her in a chorus song in Bhakht Prahlad (1946), where she sang only two lines. But her rendering of those two lines stood out and astonished everybody in the recording studio. Her major assignment was in the following year with Do Bhai. The music of that film clicked in a big way and Geeta became a top playback singer. 1947 - 1949 saw Geeta as the number one playback singer in the Bombay film industry as she moved from strength to strength. Though relegated to the second spot, Geeta managed to hold her own against Lata for more than a decade, and she and Lata became the premier female playback singers of the 1950s. Anubhav (1971), was her last film and was one of the finest works she ever did. But her drinking problems were not over and she passed away of cirrhosis of the liver in 1972 at the age of 41.

New Posts Hindustani Classical Music
Hindustani Classical Music is an Indian classical music tradition that took shape in the northern India circa the 13th and 14th centuries AD from existing religious, folk, and theatrical performance practices. The practice of singing based on notes was popular even from the Vedic times where the hymns in Sama Veda, a sacred text, was sung and not chanted. Developing a strong and diverse tradition over several centuries, it has contemporary traditions established primarily in India but also in Pakistan and Bangladesh. In contrast to Carnatic music, the other main Indian classical music tradition originating from the South, Hindustani music was not only influenced by ancient Hindu musical traditions, Vedic philosophy and native Indian sounds but also by the Persian performance practices of the Afghan Mughals.

Outside South Asia, Hindustani classical music is often associated with Indian music, as it is arguably the most popular stream of music outside the sub-continent.

Hindustani classical music, like Carnatic music, is organized by Ragas (also called raag) which are characterized, in part, by their specific ascent (Arohana) and descent (Avarohana.) The ascent notes may not be identical to the descent notes. King (Vadi) and Queen (Samvadi) notes and a unique note phrase (Pakad). In addition each raga has its natural register (Ambit) and glisando (Meend) rules, and many other specific features.
